Artist Interview: "Don't worry about your style"

The latest tutorials, interviews, tips & tricks from Easy Tiger.

We're always on the hunt for great artists. Sometimes they use our apps, sometimes they don't. In the case of New York City artist @amber_vittoria, Fused is her app of choice, but her art spans much farther than Easy Tiger.

We hope you enjoy our chat with Amber about inspiration, people watching, and what it's like to be an illustrator in our technological world.

ETA: So, who is @amber_vittoria?

@AMBER_VITTORIA: I am a human being.

What inspires you?

People -- how they interact with each other (both in person and digitally), carry themselves, act when they are in different group settings -- have always fascinated me. Also observing people when they are 'alone' -- on the subway, bus, walking -- has become a habit of mine since moving into the city.

My favorite place to observe is on the NQ train before 6am headed from Queens to Manhattan. It tends to be young women headed to workout alongside older men headed to work construction; it is an intriguing dynamic.

How does that inspiration come through in your art?

The translation can be as direct as a portrait that captures a person's physical and emotional attributes, and as vague as a woman encapsulated in greenery.

What mediums/apps do you use to create?

My most recent work is a combination of digital and brush pens; first the color is applied digitally, printed on an older laser-jet printer (for an offset effect), the line is then added by hand, and finally the piece is scanned back in (adding a bit more texture to the piece).

As for apps that I use, I tend to keep them minimal. My current favorites are Fused, Boomerang, and Instagram.

How have seen illustrating change over the past few years?

Illustrating as a whole (at least the whole that I have been subjected to) has become more personal; seeing the work of fellow illustrators become more honest to who they are whilst depicting a story (whether for a publication, product, etc) is incredible.

As to where that honesty comes from, I'm not too sure. For me, it’s about listening to my instincts, and trying not to question my artistic momentum.

Any advice for novice illustrators out there?

The best advice I've been given, and tend to ignore every so often, is to not worry about your style at a young age - it will come.

Keep up Amber on her IG, @amber_vittoria, and on her website. She's creating some really interesting work.

Let yourself be inspired by her, and then go create something great.
